Maternity Session Prep
Everything you need to know to prepare!
1. Posing is My Job!
You don’t need to know a thing about posing—just trust that I’ve got it covered. My goal is to make you look your absolute best with flattering angles and expert guidance.
2. Outfit Planning
You'll need to bring your own outfits. Comfort is key, so choose clothes you feel good in. Remember, it's all about posing and angles, not stressing over how your body looks.
-
Check out my "What to Wear" guide for inspiration.
-
Send me a photo of your chosen outfit one week in advance so I can:
-
Ensure your outfits are planned and fit properly.
-
Confirm you have everything you need.
-
Help your little ones get used to their outfits ahead of time, avoiding unnecessary stress on the session day.
-
3. Dynamic Locations and Movement
-
The locations I choose will keep us on the move, which is great for keeping kids engaged and interested throughout the session. Wear appropriate footwear for going off the path. In certain seasons, I’ll provide bug spray to keep mosquitoes and ticks at bay.
-
If we are at the studio, please find location and parking details in your booking confirmation email.
4. Setting the Tone
Your energy directly impacts how little ones behave during the session. A calm, positive vibe—especially during prep and the car ride—will make a huge difference.
-
Let kids be kids during the shoot; don’t worry about “perfect” behavior. Grumpy faces from parents can affect photos far more than a child’s mood
5. Trust the Process
Some prompts may feel silly, but there’s a method to the magic. Trust me—it will all come together beautifully.
6. Positive Language
During the session, avoid negative instructions like “Don’t do that” or “Stop sticking your tongue out.” Instead, redirect with positive phrases like, “Let’s try this!” I’ll guide your child in the right direction—you just relax and enjoy the experience.
7. Leave Extras Behind
You won’t need your cell phone or anything to carry during the session. I’m happy to hold onto small essentials like your keys.
8. How We Start
-
At the start of the session I will ask if you have any physical limitations at this point of your pregnancy
-
Kids are usually more cooperative at the beginning, so we’ll start with formal portraits (everyone looking at the camera). The number of portraits depends on the size of your group, and then we’ll move into candid moments.
9. Candid Moments Are Key
After portraits, I’ll encourage natural, genuine interactions. Some of the best shots happen when there’s no direction—just authentic moments of connection and play.
10. Special Needs or Concerns
If your child has any learning disabilities or behavioral needs, let me know in advance so I can tailor my approach.
11. Longer Sessions, More Fun
The more time we have, the more opportunity there is for candid, fun, and action shots.
12. Payment
The remaining balance of your session is due 48 hours before your start time and can be paid by clicking View Appointment Details in your booking confirmation and reminder emails

"This is the second time we have used Selina for our family photos, and will be using her every year in the future!! She is amazing with kids, and even though our 5 year old had zero interest in having his photos done, she captured some of the most beautiful photos of him!"
